Kurt retired as a Lutheran pastor in 2015 and moved with his family to Kansas City from Las Vegas. His granddaughter, Coach Ronnie, started swimming for Blue Wave Swim Team, which recruited him to become a Stroke & Turn Official in 2016. Since the team was short on officials, the coach nudged him to pursue Starting, Deck Ref, and eventually Meet Ref. Since they participated in YMCA meets, Kurt also qualified as a Y level 2. Along the way, to keep his skills sharp, Kurt got national credentials from USA Swimming in Stroke & Turn, Starting, Chief Judge, Deck Ref, and Admin. This is Kurt's fifth year with Walnut Creek! Kurt has also served on the Northland Conference Board for a few years, most recently serving as the lead chief judge for the championship meet for three or four years.
FROM KURT- "My granddaughter has recently become a junior official, able to officiate at 12 & under meets. I'm looking forward to continuing as long as Ronnie is involved. By the time I graduate to my next season of life, our team will need a new deck ref or two. I'd be happy to help anyone become an official and progress in their roles, helping our swimmers excel and enjoy the sport."
